Once you’ve registered for the TOEFL, the next step is to start practicing! USA Education Guides is here to help. We’ve outlined a variety of helpful TOEFL practice resources below, including links to where you can find a TOEFL sample test.

Where Can I Find a TOEFL Practice Test?

If you’re looking for a TOEFL practice test, ETS is the best place to start. ETS (Educational Testing Service) is the nonprofit corporation that develops and handles all TOEFL testing worldwide. They want you to succeed, and to that end, they’ve developed a variety of helpful TOEFL practice resources and sample tests to help you out:

  • Free TOEFL Practice Online
Joining TOEFL practice online is the first thing you should do when starting your TOEFL preparation. TOEFL practice online includes access to a free TOEFL practice test sampler as well as to an online TOEFL discussion board community of students and colleagues. This online community not only provides handy TOEFL practice tips, but it also allows you to get general information and feedback about what it’s like to study in an English-speaking country. And the TOEFL sample test is a way to become familiar with all four sections of the test: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. It even provides interactive feedback for the reading and listening sections!

  • ETS Web Site
If you visit the ETS web site, you’ll notice that their TOEFL information pages provide sample test questions. To access this area of the site, you’ll first need to login under your respective country’s location. Although these sample test questions are non-interactive and for viewing only, they still provide helpful insight into what to expect from your test! You’ll find sample passages and multiple-choice questions along with their respective answers for all four sections of the iBT—reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

  • Priced TOEFL Practice Test
For comprehensive TOEFL preparation, consider investing in a priced TOEFL practice test. ETS offers incredibly reasonable prices that start at just $5.95 for a practice reading test. Each TOEFL practice test includes exclusive scoring to help predict how we’ll you’ll do on the test, and also provides instant online scores and feedback (speaking scores are released by certified raters within five business days). Whether you want to try the complete iBT practice test or just stick to a simple combined skills test, you can choose the practice test that best suits your needs. Quantity discounts are also available.

  • Other TOEFL Practice Products from ETS
Additional TOEFL practice products available for purchase from ETS include audio CD and cassette tape study guides and test preparation kits, as well as their Official Guide to the TOEFL iBT. This book is a complete study guide with detailed information about each section of the test. Similar to an online TOEFL practice test, it also highlights real TOEFL sample test questions that were used in previously administered tests. It even provides copies of ETS rater responses to student tests, giving you an important edge and insight into what will be expected of you. This book also comes with a companion audio CD, complete with sample listening passages and spoken responses.

Other TOEFL Practice Resources

Taking a TOEFL practice test isn’t the only way to brush up on your ESL (English as a second language) skills! USA Education Guides also provides information about a variety of additional resources for ESL and TOEFL practice.

Visit online news sites to get a taste for the academic conversational styles you’ll be exposed to use during your test. Be sure to also check out other online English language resources, such as online study guides and tools to improve your precision across the board. You may want to join an English-speaking forum or discussion board to practice your writing skills, or chat with other students online. Web sites such as Om Audio even allow you to listen to American or British conversations in English for free. Any of these featured sites are a great TOEFL practice resource.

TOEFL Test Information

TOEFL is an abbreviated word that stands for Test of English as a Foreign Language™. It’s administered worldwide by ETS (Educational Testing Service), a nonprofit organization that’s based in the United States. Your TOEFL test results will help the schools that you are applying to gain an accurate understanding of your English skills in terms of reading, listening, speaking, and writing.

Each section of the iBT is worth 30 points, for a total of 120 points. Check with the college or university you are applying to for their score requirements; each school will have their own individual guidelines.

  • Reading 0–30
  • Listening 0–30
  • Speaking 0–30
  • Writing 0–30
  • Total Score 0–120

Please note that the speaking section of the test only applies to the TOEFL iBT. This is the de-facto standard for almost all TOEFL tests, but some select areas of the world may only be equipped to provide CBT (computer-based) or PBT (paper-based) tests.
