Many international students enroll in U.S. undergraduate programs to steep themselves in American culture, however, some learners may feel inhibited by the pressure to communicate in English. In order to better serve non-native speakers, American universities are creating English as a Second Language (ESL) programs that cater to the needs of these nontraditional learners.
For example, Sam Houston State University's (SHSU) Office of International Programs offers intensive ESL instruction through its English Language Institute (ELI), The Huntsville Item reports. The ELI works with approximately 20 non-native speakers each semester, offering them English instruction to prepare them for full participation in the American collegiate environment. Students enrolled in the program are expected to devote at least 18 hours each week to the study of English, and take courses in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Learners may also take elective courses in academic and life skills. The program was designed by James Moore, who began his career as a volunteer English tutor in the Huntsville Public Librarys literacy program. Today, he is the coordinator if SHSU's ELI and even hosts international students in his home as part of a one-month intensive language experience. Last spring, he and his wife hosted a student from Japan. "It gives students a chance to spend a month in the language environment they're trying to learn. [The student] picked up a lot of English just from being around us, and we picked up a lot of Japanese language and culture from her," Moore told the news source. Non-U.S. citizens made up 3.7 percent of the total student population for the 2008-2009 academic year, according to the Institute of International Education.
