Each year, thousands of international students move to the U.S. in order to attend American universities. These learners are often welcomed by the faculty and community of the school they enrolled in.

For example, at Eastern New Mexico University, the International and Multicultural Affairs office hosts a meeting each year to assist global learners with their transition to the U.S., The Chase reports. This fall, the campus will welcome 150 international students.

The meeting will begin with a short speech from the director of international affairs, Danni Luo, who will encourage the new residents to relax and have fun.

"We are here for international students as well as domestic students, so we can learn from each other's culture," Luo told the news source.

The director of health services, Kristin Kuhlmann, will then speak to the students about obtaining health insurance and receiving medical care in the American healthcare system.

These initiatives often help global scholars become familiar with American customs, costs of living and opportunities to practice English.

A growing number of non-native learners are studying in the U.S., as a total of 671,616 international students were enrolled at American universities during the 2008-2009 academic year, according to the Institute of International Education.ADNFCR-3053-ID-19936117-ADNFCR
