Social events allow students to eat ice cream, dance and practice English

Among the most entertaining options for international students who pursue programs in the U.S. are social events, which many universities organize on a regular basis to bring students together, educate them about their different cultures and foster a sense of community.

Most of these events revolve around food, including potluck, BBQ, catered lunch and ice cream. When potluck is in order, students are often encouraged to cook their national dishes to allow their friends and colleagues to sample an exotic cuisine.

Sometimes, other activities are added to food consumption. They may include games, movies or dancing. The latter can foster further opportunities for cultural experience.

Above all, however, international students - especially those who are new to an American university - may have a chance to practice and improve their English during social events. In fact, the crowd's diversity often attracts American students who may be willing to help out those who still struggle with the language.

For example, Cassie Wood, a freshman musical theater major at Point Park University in Pittsburgh, said that a recent ice cream social spurred "a bunch of [my friends and I to sign up] to be conversation partners," quoted by The Globe, the university media source.
