Among the different types of schools in the U.S., online institutions are growing most dynamically, as statistics suggests the sector has expanded by nearly 20 percent in recent years and more than 4 million students are enrolled in at least one online course.
When asked why they choose to pursue the online option, most students stress the flexibility that comes with distance education.
For example, Stacy Hains, a senior education major at California State University, works a part-time job and plays on the softball team, which often led to serious time crunches before she discovered online courses, according to The Modesto Bee.
"There's a lot of versatility of when I have time to sit down and do my work," Hains told the news provider, adding that now she can "attend" a class even at 11 p.m.
Although not all subjects can be taught online, courses and degree programs are offered in most fields, including nursing, teaching, business, psychology or technology.
Experts say the growth of online instruction has made it possible for individuals with time constraints - such as parents or busy professionals - or those who live in remote areas, to access education they otherwise wouldn't get. Moreover, for some international students this may be an attractive option as it may save them the costs of relocating to the U.S. while still obtaining quality education.
