Individuals who enroll in U.S. undergraduate or graduate programs have the opportunity to acquire top quality education that can open doors to rewarding careers worldwide. However, a recent report has also revealed how much their presence in the U.S. benefits the host country as well.

An annual study conducted by the National Association of Foreign Student Advisers - whose goal is to advance international education and exchange as well as global workforce development - has found that international college students contributed approximately $17.6 billion to the U.S. economy during the 2008-09 academic year.

These numbers include factors such as tuition and living expenses, but the benefits extend far beyond the financial aspects and include opportunities for social and cultural exchange, according to the University of Arkansas chancellor G. David Gearhart, quoted by ArkansasMatters.com, a local news website.

He told the news provider that "international students enrich the diversity of our campus," but stressed that were it not for the promise of quality higher education, "these students wouldn't be here."

Statistics from the Institute of International Education suggest that enrollment of international students in the U.S. increased by 7.7 percent during the academic year 2008-2009.
