Students can submit video clips as part of college application

One of the main tasks facing candidates for U.S. undergraduate or graduate programs is to create and submit an application package that stands out, but this may soon become easier as American universities are increasingly accepting video clips as part of the application.

This may be particularly beneficial for international students, who often live far away and not have a chance to visit U.S. campuses or talk to professors before applying. However, preparing and presenting a unique footage that showcases their work, accomplishments or exceptional talents may now enable them to make an even more convincing case for why they are well-suited for a particular program.

Admissions officials are careful to stress that the technical side of such videos matters far less than the creative aspect. In fact, Lee Coffin, dean of admissions at Tufts University, says that "some of the best videos are rather crude or simple in terms of their production values but they feature an appealing narrative or clever conceit that introduces us, more deeply, to an individual student," quoted by The Boston Globe.

The news source adds that in addition to videos, students have also been submitting blogs and personal websites.

According to data from the Institute of International Education, international student enrollment grew by 7.7 percent during the 2008-09 academic year, and constituted 3.7 percent of the total student population in the U.S.
