Institute of International Education offers grants to Haitian students in the U.S.

In the wake of the devastating earthquake that struck Haiti in January, the Institute of International Education (IEE) has announced it will offer grants to undergraduate and graduate students from Haiti studying in the U.S.

Haiti-Emergency Assistance for Students (Haiti EAS) will provide up to $2,000 to citizens of that country who are enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities and who are facing financial difficulties due to the recent tragedy.

Accredited U.S. institutions will be invited to nominate up to five deserving students for awards that will cover the spring 2010 semester. Submissions can be sent by international student advisers or other campus officials, but not by students themselves.

"Our goal is to alleviate immediate financial burdens and provide a measure of security during these tragic times," said president and CEO of IIE Allan Goodman.

IIE - a nonprofit advocacy organization headquartered in New York that tracks international students in the U.S. - estimates there are more than 850 students from Haiti pursuing degrees at American universities.

The first round of grant nominations should be submitted to IIE by February 12. ADNFCR-3053-ID-19596215-ADNFCR
