Global students have academic opportunities at large universities

State universities often enroll a high number of international students. However, the smaller campus branches of these schools often provide global scholars with a close community environment.

For example, Penn State experienced record enrollments of international students this fall. The school's Mont Alto campus has the largest incoming class in the school's history, The Herald-Mail reports. Mont Alto is welcoming non-U.S. learners from Bangladesh, Taiwan, Hong Kong, China and Saudi Arabia.

"We've realized an increase in students due in part to a 15 percent increase in direct applicants to our campus - students who elect Mont Alto as their first choice when applying to Penn State," chancellor David Gnage told The Herald. "We are also pleased the university has approved Mont Alto to accept international students."

The most popular bachelor's degree programs for global students this fall include engineering, science and agricultural studies, while associate's degree programs in business, human development and family studies, and occupational therapy are experiencing increased enrollment as well.

A growing number of global scholars are studying in the U.S., as a total of 671,616 international students were enrolled at American universities during the 2008-2009 academic year, according to the Institute of International Education.ADNFCR-3053-ID-19930328-ADNFCR
