Festival challenges international students to compete

With the approach of spring and the return of longer days and warmer evenings, many colleges and universities are holding festivals and fairs to mark the turning of the season. International students taking classes in the U.S. are joining in on the fun.

Some colleges are even making their international festivities a competition. The University of South Alabama's spring festival will feature performances and displays from several international student groups, and a panel of judges chosen by the Council of International Student Organizations will select a winner, according to the Vanguard, the student newspaper at the college.

One Indian student group is planning an elaborate cultural dance to exhibit their heritage.

"We want to show off the backbone of India," said Gopinath Kurakula, president of the university's Indian Student Organization, quoted in the newspaper.

Pride in one's home country is an important part of many international student organizations. These groups give scholars a chance to socialize and connect with other students from their home countries, and frequently offer support for students new to the U.S.

The population of international students taking courses in the U.S. increased by 7.7 percent last year, according to the Institute of International Education.ADNFCR-3053-ID-19664946-ADNFCR
