Last Saturday, January 30, former Secretary of State General Colin Powell was the keynote speaker at Kaplan University's winter 2010 graduation ceremony in Miami, where he saluted the graduates and stressed the importance of online education in shaping America's future.

The former top diplomat, who had also served as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, urged his audience to strive to reach new heights in their personal development and professional careers. He also discussed the changing needs of today's degree seekers and the importance of higher education adapting to this new generation of students.

"You can improve yourselves using the incredible power of [online education]," Powell said, adding that "this revolution will speed through this country because of its effectiveness and power."

The statesman also asked the graduates to "celebrate your achievements [today, but] tomorrow get back online and determine what you are going to do next."

Kaplan University has graduated over 22,000 students since 2001, and last weekend nearly 500 participated in the commencement ceremony, either in person or via the school's first ever live webcast of the event.

Distance learning is a time- and cost-effective way of obtaining higher education, which makes it particularly attractive to working adults, busy parents or foreigners who would like to earn an American degree, but cannot afford the expenses associated with living in the U.S. ADNFCR-3053-ID-19591148-ADNFCR
