Name: Marcia Cortes Pereira de Oliveira
Country of origin: Brazil
College attending: Johns Hopkins University
Year in college: Second
Major: Environmental sciences and policy
Marcia has received Hobsons’ $1,000 scholarship award. Marcia is currently attending Johns Hopkins University. Her ultimate career goal is to have an interesting job in an international organization where she could contribute to a better environment and improving people's lives.
Marcia has been working for seven years in the environmental area. She used to coordinate a program in capacity building in the Amazon. Her background is in social communication, so she decided to return to school to go deeper into environmental studies.
“Johns Hopkins is an excellent university,” said Marcia. “The professors are PhDs with a high-level ability in teaching and experience. I have access to a whole universe of libraries and virtual newspapers which JHU provides us. It has been a great opportunity to study in this country.”
When asked if she had advice for other international students, Marcia responded, “I would tell them to be brave and do not be afraid to face an international experience. In the beginning it is hard because you miss a lot—your family and friends—but if you open your mind to accept and understand a new culture, you could rise as a person and also as a professional. You learn a lot about yourself and how to respect people's differences.”
Congratulations, Marcia!
