Academic Studies (F-type) Visas
F-1 Visa
This non-immigrant, full-time visa allows students to stay in the United States for the duration of their studies. It is offered only through U.S. academic institutions. F-1 students can work in their field of study as part of Curricular Practical Training (CPT) or Optional Practical Training (OPT).
F-2 Visa
This type of visa, usually extended to dependents of F-1 visa holders, prohibits holders from working; however, minor F-2 visa holders may attend public school.
F-3
F-3 visas are issued to citizens of Mexico or Canada who commute to the United States only to attend school, while residing full time in their country of origin. F-3 visa holders are not permitted to work, but may be eligible to complete CPT or OPT.
Non-Academic/Vocational Studies (M-Type)
M-1
Students of vocational or technical programs in the United States may hold an M-1 visa. These students are allowed in the United States for a fixed period of time, as indicated by the I-94 card that is stamped upon entry into the country. M-1 visa holders are not permitted to stay in the United States for more than one year (unless for medical reasons); however, their stay can be extended for OPT, as well as for a 30-day grace period after visa expiration. Holders of these visas may not work on or off campus and may not upgrade to F-1 status.
M-2
M-2 visas are issued to dependents of M-1 visa holders. Holders are not permitted to work, but minors may attend public school.
M-3
This type of visa is issued to citizens of Mexico or Canada who commute to the United States only to attend vocational/technical school, while residing full time in their country of origin.
Academic Studies as an Exchange Visitor (J-Type)
J-1
J-1 is a non-immigrant visa issued to qualifying students who are participating in cultural exchange programs. This type of visa allows students to stay in the United States for up to 30 days after the end of their exchange program. J-1 visa holders must return to their home country for at least two years before reentering the United States.
Types of exchange students include but are not limited to:
- Au pair
- Camp counselor
- Intern
- Flight trainee
- Government visitor
- Short-term scholar
J-2
This type of visa allows dependents of J-1 visa holders to enter the United States. J-2 visa holders may not work, but minors can attend public school.
